UK Pensions in Cyprus in 2026: What British Pension Holders Need to Know
WHY THE PENSION TYPE MATTERS
A pension should not be labelled simply as a UK pension and then treated as though every payment follows the same tax rule. UK State Pension, workplace or occupational pensions, private pensions and pensions paid for government service need to be identified separately before the Cyprus treatment is applied.
THE CYPRUS 5% FOREIGN-PENSION OPTION FROM 2026
A Cyprus tax resident receiving a foreign pension can choose between the normal Cyprus income-tax rates and the special method under which foreign pension income above €5,000 is taxed at 5%. The election is made for the relevant tax year. The better result depends on the amount of pension income, other income, deductions and the treaty position. It should not be treated as an automatic 5% rate for every retiree.
STATE PENSION IS NOT THE SAME AS A GOVERNMENT-SERVICE PENSION
Under the UK-Cyprus treaty, ordinary pensions are generally taxable in the state of residence. A UK State Pension is not a government-service pension. Government-service pensions are a separate treaty category and can remain taxable in the paying state, subject to the treaty rules and the individual's residence and nationality. The temporary historic election for certain pre-2018 government-service pensioners ended on 31 December 2024, so a new 2026 move should be analysed under the current treaty position.
WHAT TO REVIEW BEFORE MOVING
Confirm the exact pension payer and pension type. Map the intended UK departure date and Cyprus tax-residence date. Review any planned lump sums, drawdowns, annuity changes or transfers before they happen. Keep annual pension statements and evidence of UK tax deducted. Consider the pension together with rent, dividends, interest, employment or business income.
CYPRUS REPORTING
Foreign pension income may still need to be reported in Cyprus even where treaty relief or a special rate affects the tax payable. Where foreign tax has been deducted, double-tax relief should be considered under the applicable treaty and Cyprus rules. Payment and provisional-tax obligations should also be checked for the relevant year.
