Cyprus Relocation Documents Checklist: Build the Legal File Before You Move

A Cyprus relocation file is easier to prepare before the move than after it. The problem is rarely one missing passport copy. It is usually a chain of evidence that does not line up: the residence route says one thing, the employment contract says another, the bank statements do not explain the source of funds, or a certificate expires before the appointment.
This checklist is about the evidence. It does not select the residence route. Start with the route, then build the documents around it.
Last reviewed: 1 August 2026. Document lists, validity periods, certification and filing procedures differ by application and can change.
Choose the route before ordering certificates
An EU registration file, visitor permit, Digital Nomad application, employment permit, Category F application and Regulation 6(2) investor file do not use the same evidence. Before paying for Apostilles, translations or medical tests, use the Moving to Cyprus route checklist and the quick residence-permit comparison.
Identity, status and travel history
Keep the current passport, relevant previous passports, visas, entry stamps, residence cards, registration certificates and application receipts together. Where residence or absence periods matter, prepare a dated travel chronology and retain boarding, border or other records that support it. Add evidence of any name, nationality or civil-status change so documents can be matched without guesswork.
Marriage, children and dependency
Collect marriage or civil-partnership certificates, full birth certificates, divorce or death records that explain the current family position, and custody, consent, adoption, guardianship or dependency documents where relevant. A person is not automatically a dependant under every route. The definition changes with the sponsor, permit, age and facts.
Income, savings and source of funds
Immigration evidence and anti-money-laundering evidence overlap, but they answer different questions. The residence authority may ask whether resources are stable and sufficient. A bank, lawyer, developer or seller may need to understand where the money came from and how it reached the transaction.
Keep bank statements, payslips, pension letters, tax records, dividend vouchers, tenancy records, investment statements and company distributions that explain income. For capital, retain sale contracts, inheritance records, loan agreements and a clear transfer trail. Large unexplained credits, cash deposits or related-party payments should be dealt with before filing or sending funds.
Employment, remote work and company records
An employment route needs the real employer, role, salary, contract and professional evidence. A Digital Nomad file needs foreign-employer or foreign-client records, remote-work terms, invoices and payment evidence. A foreign-interest-company route needs the company ownership, capital, office, activity and registration evidence as well as the employee file. Do not describe local work as foreign remote work, or an active business as passive income.
Accommodation and property
Accommodation evidence may be a tenancy agreement, title deed, purchase contract or another document accepted for the route. A property purchase needs its own title, planning, survey, search, contract, payment and completion records. A non-EU buyer may also need acquisition permission. Where the property is intended for Regulation 6(2), the qualifying investment and payment evidence must be checked before a reservation or transfer of funds.
Buying a home and obtaining residence are separate legal workstreams. Read the Cyprus property and residence guide.
Health cover, medical records and criminal records
Keep the insurance certificate and policy terms showing the cover required for the route. An S1, EHIC or GHIC may be relevant in a different context but should not be treated as automatic proof of long-term Cyprus healthcare entitlement. Medical results and criminal-record certificates must be obtained in the accepted form, within the correct validity period, and with the required legalisation and translation.
Tax and social-insurance records
Immigration residence and tax residence are separate. Keep a day-count record, foreign tax-residence certificates, tax returns, employment and pension statements, company records and treaty evidence that may be needed for the first Cyprus tax year. Use our first-time Cyprus tax residence and non-dom guide as a starting point, then check the actual income and company position.
Wills, powers of attorney and succession records
Keep existing wills, trusts, shareholder agreements, beneficiary designations, powers of attorney and estate records available for review. A Cyprus will or power of attorney should be checked against documents already signed abroad rather than added in isolation.
Apostille, translation and expiry
A foreign document may need an Apostille, consular legalisation, certified copy or official translation. The correct process depends on the issuing country, document and receiving authority. Translation does not cure missing legalisation. Legalisation does not cure an expired certificate. Prepare a validity calendar for criminal records, medical results, bank statements, insurance and photographs.
A safer order of work
Confirm nationality, present status, family and intended activity.
Select the residence and work route.
Map each document, issuing authority, legalisation step and validity period.
Build the income and source-of-funds trail before transferring or committing money.
Coordinate property, employment, company, tax and healthcare work without confusing their legal tests.
Obtain time-sensitive records last and file while they remain valid.
Frequently asked questions
Should every document be Apostilled before advice is taken?
No. First identify the route and receiving authority. Some records need no legalisation, while others use a different process depending on the country of issue.
Can the same bank statements be used for immigration and a property purchase?
Sometimes, but the questions differ. Immigration may focus on stable resources. The transaction’s AML review may need a fuller source-of-funds and source-of-wealth trail.
Does a residence permit settle tax and healthcare?
No. Tax residence, domicile, GeSY eligibility and insurance requirements are separate questions.
How Cyprus Law Chambers can help
We turn the route and timetable into a document plan. We identify what is needed, what must be legalised or translated, when each certificate should be obtained and how the immigration file interacts with property, company, tax, banking and succession work. Visit our Cyprus immigration legal services page or contact the firm.
Legal note
This article is general information. It is not the complete checklist for any individual immigration, property, tax, employment, banking or succession matter. Current official requirements and the facts of the file must be checked before documents are obtained or submitted.
